About Surah Al-Ahzab (The Combined Forces)

Surah Al-Ahzab is the 33rd chapter of the Holy Quran. It is a Medinan Surah consisting of 73 verses. The Surah is named "Al-Ahzab" (The Combined Forces / The Confederates) because it vividly describes the Battle of the Trench (Ghazwah al-Khandaq) when multiple tribes united to attack Medina.

This Surah is historically and spiritually very rich. It addresses the Prophet (peace be upon him) directly, giving him guidance and comfort during a time of great trial. It abolishes certain pre-Islamic customs like zihar and the legal status of adopted sons. It contains the famous verse declaring the Prophet as an excellent pattern (uswah hasanah) for believers. It also includes the verse on spiritual equality of men and women (verse 35), detailed rulings regarding the Prophet's wives, and the instruction for believing women to draw their outer garments close.

The Surah ends with one of the most profound statements in the Quran about the "Trust" (Amanah) that was offered to the heavens, the earth, and the mountains, but they refused to bear it. Man accepted it, and he is described as unjust and ignorant (zaluman jahula). This verse highlights the immense responsibility of free will and moral choice given to humanity.
