About Surah An-Nur (The Light)

Surah An-Nur is the 24th chapter of the Holy Quran. It is a Medinan Surah consisting of 64 verses. The Surah is named "The Light" because of the famous Ayat al-Nur (Light Verse) in verse 35, which beautifully describes Allah as the Light of the heavens and the earth using a powerful parable of a lamp in a niche.

This Surah contains very important social and legal rulings including the punishment for adultery and fornication, the punishment for false accusation of adultery (qadhf), the procedure of li'an when a husband accuses his wife, rules regarding lowering the gaze, modesty and hijab for both men and women, privacy etiquette when entering homes, and encouragement for marriage.

Verses 11-20 were revealed regarding the Ifk incident (the slander against Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her), exonerating her and teaching believers how to deal with rumors and false accusations. The Surah also discusses the behavior of hypocrites and ends with powerful reminders of Allah's knowledge and sovereignty.
